Driver License: Older drivers cling to their independence for Driver License of Motor Vehicles
When a 75-year-old woman pulled out in front of a trailer truck without looking nearly two weeks ago, her second accident within nine months, Easton police asked the state Registry of Motor Vehicles to retest her — or yank her license.
"The question was, 'Do we want to give her a $35 fine or do we want to save her life?' " asked Easton Police Chief Thomas Kominski. "That's what it comes down to."
It is a question that may be asked with increasing frequency as baby boomers in the United States get older.
"We are trying to look at the long-term trend," said Brook Chipman, spokesman for the governor's Highway Safety Bureau. "Essentially, the graying of America requires this."

PennDOT Offers Replacement Driver License & Motor Vehicle Products to Flood Victims at No ChargeHARRISBURG, Pa., In light of the recent flooding that has occurred throughout the Commonwealth, Pennsylvania State Transportation Secretary Allen D. Biehler, P.E., today announced that PennDOT will offer flood victims replacement driver license and vehicle products at no charge, through Nov. 8.
Driver license products include duplicate licenses, learner's permits and photo identification cards. Motor vehicle products include replacement license plates and stickers; registration cards; duplicate titles; and Person with Disability placards.
"Anyone whose Pennsylvania driver's license or motor vehicle product has been lost or destroyed as a result of the flooding that hit Pennsylvania will be able to apply for replacement credentials and receive them free of charge," Biehler said. "It's the least we can do for the people in Pennsylvania who have been struck by this disaster."

Locke touts new service as part of our wired stateOLYMPIA -- Beginning Nov. 1, most motorists will be able to renew their driver's licenses with a click of the computer mouse, much as they can already renew car tabs, reserve a camp site or apply for a business license.
Gov. Gary Locke, who has made "wired" government, shorter lines and friendlier service a signature issue during his eight years in office, also announced a snappy, redesigned state Web portal, Access Washington.
