INDIANAPOLISThe Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) (BMV) reminds some motorists to expect an increase in their 2004 registration costs. Effective Jan. 1, nine counties instituted new wheel and surtaxes to be collected by the BMV in addition to annual registration fees.

Clark, Clinton, Decatur, Elkhart, Greene, Han*****, Henry, LaGrange, and St. Joseph counties will begin charging wheel/surtax fees to residents in 2004. These nine counties will be added to the 26 counties that charged wheel and surtaxes during 2003. Under Indiana law each city-county council has the option of raising funds for road expenditures by instituting these fees, said Gerald B. Coleman, BMV Commissioner. We just want customers to be aware that these taxes may affect their anticipated 2004 registration costs. The BMV encourages constituents to check with county officials for more information. Local county auditors or county clerks offices should be able to provide specific information concerning rates, history, and voting procedures relating to each countys establishment of these taxes.
